Who we are
The farming in the Mississippi Delta is characterized by the presence of the richest and most fertile soils in the world, resulting from the accumulation of sediments carried by the Mississippi River over thousands of years. What was once synonymous with the term "King Cotton," the agricultural landscape of the region has changed significantly over the past few decades. Today, the region is characterized by massive laser-leveled fields of soybeans, corn, and rice, in addition to the traditional cotton crop. The region is also the hub of the American aquaculture industry, specifically in the farming of catfish, which takes advantage of the flat landscape and the water table aquifer that supplies water to the region. However, the modern farming in the region is a delicate balance between the positive factors, such as the use of high-tech equipment, the massive scale of the operations, and the need to balance the effects of the unpredictable weather, the high irrigation needs from the aquifer, and the socioeconomic history of the region.
